Colorado Neurological Institute
The Colorado Neurological Institute is a unique institution dedicated to serving people with any type of neurological disorder, including traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. The Institute has over 50 member physicians, all specialists in various neurological disorders. Treatment is coordinated through Institute with regular clinics on various disorders. Treatment for many disorders is also offered at several Centers. Institute members have their own private practices and are affiliated with numerous area hospitals and rehab facilities.

Elena Draznin, MD
Dr. Draznin is a physiatrist. She did her medical training in the Soviet Union, including a residency in neurology. She then served at residency in pediatrics at Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Israel and a residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. She is Clinical Assistant Professor of PM&R at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and Medical Director of the Swedish General Rehabilitation Unit at Swedish Medical Center. She is also affiliated with Spalding Rehabilitation Hospital.

Karen O. Theriot, MD
Dr. Theriot is a physiatrist; she is board certified in internal medicine and physical medicine and rehabilitation. She earned her medical degree from Tulane University School of Medicine in 1982 and did her internship there. Thomas E. Balazy, MD, Medical Director
Dr. Balazy is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He received his medical degree and completed his residency at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, and completed a fellowship in spinal cord and brain injury at Craig. Dr. Balazy is the author of a widely read publication on chronic pain in spinal cord injury.
Shih-Fong (Mike) Hsu, MD
Dr. Hsu is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He received his medical degree and completed his residency at the National Taiwan University Hospital. He completed his specialty training in rehabilitation medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and went on to fellowship training in spinal cord injury and brain injury rehabilitation at Craig Hospital. He is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Dr. Hsu has extensively researched tracheal and esophageal complications in spinal cord injury. Dr. Hsu’s spinal cord injury team recently was chosen to pilot the development of SCI Critical Pathways for the hospital.
Mark R. Johansen, MD
Dr. Johansen earned his medical degree from the University of Utah. He finished his year of internship in internal medicine at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver and completed his residency training in rehabilitation medicine at the University of Utah where he served as chief resident. He supervises one of Craig’s spinal cord injury rehabilitation teams. Dr. Johansen joined the CNS Medical Group in July 2001 following a subspecialty Fellowship program in neurotrauma rehabilitation at Craig. In 2004, Dr. Johansen received a sub-specialty certification in SCI by the Board of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Daniel P. Lammertse, MD
Dr. Lammertse received his medical degree and specialty training in rehabilitation medicine at Ohio State University. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and has a sub-specialty certification in spinal cord injury. He has authored numerous chapters and scientific articles on topics in spinal cord injury and is internationally-known expert on spinal cord injury rehabilitation. He is the project director of the Rocky Mountain Regional Spinal Cord Injury System. Dr. Lammertse is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Spinal Cord Medicine and is a member of the Spinal Cord Injury Medicine Examination Committee of the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Lammertse is Associate Clinical Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine at the University of Colorado.
Indira S. Lanig, MD
Dr. Lanig is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She received her medical degree and completed her residency at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Lanig currently is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center in the department of physical medicine and rehabilitation. She has authored several chapters on topics in spinal cord injury and was lead author with other Craig staff on a textbook on Health Promotion and SCI. Dr. Lanig is the current President of the American Paraplegia Society (APS). She has served on the Scientific Advisory Board of the Paralyzed Veterans of America Spinal Cord Research Foundation. Dr. Lanig has a sub-specialty certification in SCI by the Board of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Gary A. Maerz, MD, MBA
Dr. Maerz joined CNS in 2001. He is board certified in the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation, and board certified in the subspecialty of spinal cord injury medicine. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor in the University of Colorado residency program. He is currently President of the CNS Medical Group. Clinical and his research interests include metabolic changes after spinal cord injury, and pain and spasticity management. Dr. Maerz has a special interest in combined brain injury/spinal cord injury patients, and directs the clinical team at Craig Hospital which treats these complex patients.
David L. Ripley, MD
David L. Ripley, MD began his practice with the CNS Medical Group at Craig Hospital in 2004 and directs one of Craig’s traumatic brain injury treatment teams. Dr. Ripley received his degree from the Medical College of Georgia. He served his internship at the Medical College of Georgia and served his residency at the Medical College of Virginia Hospital. Dr. Ripley comes to Craig Hospital after serving most recently as the Medical Director of Post Acute Services and the Medical Director of Brain Injury Research at The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehab. Prior to medical school, he worked as a Certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor and retains certification as a CRC. He is included here because TBI frequently occurs with SCI.
Alan H. Weintraub, MD
Dr. Weintraub is the Medical Director of the Brain Injury Treatment Team and Medical Director of the TBI Model Systems Grant Program. Dr. Weintraub has been at Craig since 1985 after he completed his residency at University of Colorado Health Sciences Center and his fellowship at Craig. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and is an assistant clinical professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He was a board member for the Rocky Mountain Regional Brain Injury Center and is a member of the Colorado Division of Workers Compensation Task Force for the development of Medical Treatment Guidelines for TBI. Dr. Weintraub’s interests include pharmacologic rehabilitation and sports-related brain injury, and he also is currently co-developing a Spasticity Clinic. He is included here because TBI frequently occurs with SCI.
