According to one Australian man, bicycle helmets do more harm than good. Bill Curnow is set to publish a paper today that condemns helmet laws throughout Australia. He actually believes that wearing a helmet increases one’s risk of serious brain injury. He points to evidence in experimental studies where helmets were shown to grab the surface on impact and create significantly more rotation of the head.
Isn’t this just another case of the “he might still be alive if he hadn’t been wearing his seatbelt” stories? Are we really to believe that helmets cause more serious injuries than they prevent?
Personally, if my head absolutely had to hit pavement, I would prefer it was inside of a helmet at the time.
Should we maybe rethink the design of bicycle helmets? Should the government even concern themselves in issues such as this? Let us know what you think!
