U.S News & World Report has named The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago the #1 rehabilitation hospital in the United States since 1991. In addition to providing state-of-the-art care to brain and spinal cord patients, The Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago participates in research, education, and advocacy.
RIC treats patients of all ages, from children to adult. Each team is led by a physiatrist, a doctor who specializes in physical medicine and rehabilitation. Depending upon the patient’s particular needs, other specialists on the team might include rehabilitation nurses, social workers, psychologists, physical and occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, vocational counselors, respiratory therapists, and pediatric specialists.
Some things that researchers at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago are studying and working with are the Lokomat, a robot-like walking therapy that could, at some point, help those with paralysis learn to walk; and brain mapping, which can show how brain activity changes after injury.
