Casa Colina provides a full roster of inpatient services in a state-of-the-art hospital for a variety of catastrophic illnesses and injuries, including brain and spinal cord injury. The Cottage Rehabilitation Hospital strives to address the medical, physical, cognitive, psychological, and family issues of each and every patient using a team of interdisciplinary physicians, nurses, and therapists. All treatment is individualized and age appropriate. Every patient is assigned a case manager who coordinates the care plan and also assists with any social and economic problems that may arise as the result of the injury. In more than 30 years of providing rehab services, the Rehabilitation Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has treated more than 10,000 patients with spinal cord and brain injuries. In addition to providing state-of-the-art technology and services, the center also does research and has contributed greatly to what we know today about brain and spinal cord injury. The facility includes 76 beds and has a staff comprising physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech/language pathologists, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals. About 150 people are treated in the spinal cord program each year, which contributes to the center’s specialized skills and experience. The Rehabilitation Center promotes an integrated approach to care, which means the medical team works in conjunction with the patient and his or her family to ensure that optimal gains are made. Spinal cord injury and brain injury are two of the areas of expertise at St. Jude’s rehabilitation facility. Geared specifically toward children, the programs advocate hope and healing in a supportive environment. Patient care is highly specialized depending upon the injury, and all patients have access to a wide variety of programs including physical therapy, occupational therapy, education and support groups, audiology services, and speech therapy. The Long Beach Memorial Rehabilitation Center, located at the Long Beach Memorial Hospital, has brain and spinal cord injury rehabilitation programs for adults at its Long Beach campus. The Brain Injury Program boasts specialized programs for people with all types and levels of injury, ranging from the Sensory Stimulation Program for seriously brain injured patients at the beginning of the recovery process, to the Brain Injury Program that focuses on wellness and community integration. The Spasticity Clinic, Balance and Vestibular Center, and Outpatient Neuro-Rehabilitation are also unique. The Spinal Cord Injury Program is designed to help patients reach the maximum level of independence possible, and is the only facility in Southern California to perform the advanced surgical technique of upper extremity electrical implants known as the “Freehand” system.
