Why New Mexico Families Trust Us With Their Cases
Families often come to us at a time when very little feels clear. Our role begins with learning more about your loved one and your situation, understanding what you’ve been told, what you’ve experienced, and what questions still remain.
From there, we coordinate a careful review of the medical care involved. This includes gathering records and working with qualified, independent medical experts who can evaluate what happened against accepted standards of care. The goal is not to rush to conclusions, but to help you arrive at an informed understanding.
If you choose to move forward, you’ll have direct access to your attorney throughout the process. We intentionally maintain a limited caseload so that each family receives the time, attention, and communication they deserve. You remain in control of every decision along the way.

What a Stroke Misdiagnosis Review May Find
A medical review focuses on one question: Did the care align with what is generally expected?
How Misdiagnosis Can Happen
Symptoms may be mistaken for less urgent conditions. In some cases, strokes, especially those affecting the brainstem, do not present with familiar warning signs. Early symptoms can also come and go, making recognition more difficult in the moment.
What the Review Examines
The review looks closely at whether stroke was considered early enough, how quickly imaging, such as CT or MRI was performed, and whether the patient was discharged or kept for observation. It also evaluates whether specialists, such as neurologists, were involved when appropriate.
Timing is central to stroke treatment. Even short delays can affect treatment options and outcomes. This is especially important in New Mexico, a state with a DIDO median much longer than recommended guidelines. DIDO, or door-in-door-out, is the length of time it takes for a patient to begin the transfer to and leave for a medical center capable of stroke treatment. The recommended time is 120 minutes or fewer, but with a suggested time of 60 to 90 minutes.
New Mexico’s average DIDO is 146 to 209 minutes for acute ischemic stroke eligible for endovascular therapy and 259 to 338 minutes for other acute ischemic stroke. Many of the stroke centers in New Mexico are located in Albuquerque, meaning large parts of the state are underserved, and residents may need to drive long distances to receive the care they need.
What the Findings Can Mean
Sometimes, the review confirms that care was appropriate despite a serious outcome. In other cases, it may identify missed warning signs or delays in treatment.
Either way, the purpose is clarity, so you can better understand what happened and decide what, if anything, comes next.

What Happens If the Review Finds a Problem
If a medical review identifies concerns, the next step is understanding what those findings mean in a legal context.
This typically involves looking at whether a provider—or multiple providers—may have deviated from accepted standards of care, and whether that contributed to the outcome. Responsibility can rest with an individual clinician, an emergency department, a hospital system, or a combination of parties.
From there, a case, if you choose to pursue one, is built around those findings. This includes working with medical experts, documenting what happened, and outlining how earlier recognition or treatment may have changed the course of events.
The goal is not to assign blame for its own sake. It is to help families access the resources they may need moving forward, such as ongoing medical care, rehabilitation, lost income, or long-term support. And care can be very expensive.
| Type of Care | Estimated Cost in New Mexico in 2025 |
| Private duty nurse (hourly rate) | $105/hour |
| Private duty nurse (visit rate) | $153/visit |
| Long-term care facility, e.g., nursing home (semi-private room) | ~$300/day / ~$9,125/month |
| Long-term care facility, e.g., nursing home (private room) | ~$350/day / ~$10,630/month |

If you’re not sure whether to take that step, there’s no pressure to decide right away. Some families choose to move forward, while others simply want the clarity the review provides. Both are valid paths.
How Our Lawyer Helps Families Get Answers
Reaching out to a lawyer at this stage is not about taking legal action. It’s about understanding what happened and getting clear, reliable answers through a careful review process.
It Starts with Listening
The process begins with a conversation centered on your experience. You can share what happened, what symptoms were present, what you were told by providers, and where things began to feel uncertain. This step is not rushed. It’s an opportunity to make sure your concerns are heard and understood before anything else happens.
Gathering the Full Medical Picture
After that, we work to collect the complete medical record. This includes hospital notes, imaging studies, test results, and documentation of how care progressed over time. Putting together a clear timeline is an important part of understanding how decisions were made and how events unfolded.
Coordinating an Independent Review
Once the records are gathered, we coordinate a review with qualified, independent medical experts. Their role is to evaluate the care provided and compare it to what is generally expected under similar circumstances. This step is careful and methodical, with the goal of reaching a well-supported understanding.
Understanding the Findings
In some cases, the review confirms that providers acted appropriately despite a negative outcome. In others, it may identify missed warning signs, delays in treatment, or gaps in care. Either outcome provides important clarity about what happened.
Moving Forward at Your Pace
If concerns are identified, you can decide what—if anything—you want to do next. Some families choose to explore legal options, while others feel that having answers is enough. There is no pressure to move forward.
Explore Your Options After a Stroke
If you’re left with questions about what happened, a conversation can be a place to start. We’re here to listen, review the details, and help you better understand the care your loved one received. There’s no cost to reach out, and no obligation to move forward. Just an opportunity to get clear, informed answers, so you can decide what feels right for you and your family.
