The William Donald Schaefer Rehabilitation Center is located at Baltimore’s Kernan Hospital. The four-unit facility, which has 32 beds per unit, has one unit for traumatic brain injury, and another for spinal cord/multiple trauma. The center is a member of the University Rehabilitation Network, which comprises seven rehabilitation programs that are linked to each other.
Both the Traumatic Brain Injury and Spinal Cord Injury programs provide treatment for both adolescents and adults, with a focus on achieving the highest level of function and independence possible. The treatment approach is individualized, with ongoing care structured at helping the patient reach his or her goals.
The facility features bathroom and kitchen setups so that people can learn daily living skills, as well as a wide variety of therapy equipment and an aquatic pool.
The William Donald Schaefer Rehabilitation Hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), as well as the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

The Rehabilitation Center at The Good Samaritan Hospital of Maryland partners with John Hopkins University School of Medicine in the treatment of spinal cord injury. Care is highly individualized according to the patient’s particular needs, and is coordinated by a case manager.
The Spinal Cord Injury program focuses on returning patients to the community with as much independence as possible, using an interdisciplinary team that includes the patient’s family. In addition to helping the patient cope physically, the program also focuses on the mental coping skills that each patient needs following catastrophic injury.
